Students will learn how checks are routed.
Students will explore information about the Federal Reserve System.
Students will reconcile a bank statement.

Time Frame:

Two 50-minute class periods

Materials:

Bank samples of a bank reconciliation form

Bank samples of a bank statement

Sample checks that have been endorsed and canceled. Include both checks that have routed in your area and from state to state. (Look on the backs of canceled checks.)

Technology Tools/Courseware:

Internet Computer Lab
Computer projection device
PowerPoint software

Teacher Notes:

Reserve the Internet Computer Lab.
Obtain equipment for PowerPoint Presentation.
Collect samples of canceled checks and bank statements.
Check that an Acceptable Use Policy is on file for each student.

Procedures:

Use cooperative learning such as having the students line up from shortest to tallest. Bring the end of the line to meet the beginning of the line and have them face each other. Take every four students in the two lines to form a group.
Students, working in their group, go to the Internet Computer Lab and do the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet.
Each group presents and shares the information it found while completing the worksheet.
Use the PowerPoint Presentation to illustrate the Federal Reserve System.
Use the PowerPoint Presentation to illustrate the different types of endorsements and their uses.
Students do the Endorsement Situations Worksheet.
Pass around the samples of canceled checks and discuss their routing.
Use the PowerPoint Presentation to explain the bank reconciliation statement. Include dishonored checks, outstanding checks, and outstanding deposits.
Using the checkbook the students did in lesson one, cut off the checks they wrote and save them. Return only the checkbook stubs or checkbook register to the students. Give each student the Bank Statement. Have each student create a bank reconciliation statement.
Students will turn in the checkbook stubs or checkbook register and the bank reconciliation statement.

Modifications:

Students can work independently instead of in groups.
Make changes necessary to meet the individual student's IEP.

Enrichment activities:

Have students bring in a sample canceled check and a written paragraph describing the check's routing trip.

Evaluate the student's group presentation.
