Flower Power

Grade: 1

Subject: Language Arts, Science, Math

Duration of Lesson: 30 minutes

Materials: book "Flowers, Trees, Fruit" by Sally Morgan, All Around Plants journal,  worksheets (see procedures),

Technology:   computer, Microsoft Power Point, data projector, Microsoft Word

Teacher Notes:
    * The students must have Safety and Acceptable Use Policy permission slips for use of the Internet ( Policy 2460 ).
    * Collect flowers in advance or purchase from florist.

Procedures:
    1).   Begin lesson by reading the book "Flowers, Trees, Fruit" by Sally Morgan . Check comprehension by asking questions about the book.
    2).  Show the Power Point presentation "Flower Power". Make sure to point out that flowers have many different types of petals.
    3).  Distribute one flower to each of the students.  Distribute the worksheet: "Flower Intro".  Have the students draw and color their flower.  Tell the students to identify the parts of the flower (petals, leaves, stems, roots, seeds) and to observe the differences among the flowers.
    4).  Distribute the worksheet:  "Flower Count".  The directions are printed on the worksheet.
    5).  Journal entry--  The students should write two things they know about flowers.

Modifications:
    Assistance will be provided based upon individualized educational plans and student needs.

Enrichment Activities:
    *  Students may use a hand lens to observe the flower petals and record their observations in their journals.
    *  Try the crop quiz at NASS KIDS.

Evaluation/Assessment:
    observation of classroom participation, journal, worksheets
