What's in the Bag?

Duration of Lesson : 2 days -30 minutes

What's in the Bag? " activity page, overhead of "Plant
Parts" activity sheet, overhead Graph
sheet,

Part am I?" activity sheet, Book: "The
Giving Tree", "All
Around Plants" journal
Technology Tools/Courseware : computer, Internet access, Data Projector, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Printer, Overhead projector
Teacher Notes :
Procedures:
1). Introduce lesson with
"The
Giving Tree" .
A). Share story.
B). Discuss parts of the tree used by the boy and how they were used..
2). Review plant parts using an overhead copy of the "Plant Parts" activity sheet and labels. This sheet can also be copied and used as an additional evaluation instrument or seatwork activity.
3). Team Activity
A). Divide class into teams of three.
B). Assign each team a plant part.
C). Each team draws and labels three items we can eat and three objects
made from that plant part.
D). Allow time for teams to share drawings.
4). Show PowerPoint "What's in the Bag? " Read clues and allow children to guess what plant is in the bag.
5). Distribute "
What's in the Bag?" homework activity page. Children will choose a
plant to bring hidden in a paper bag. Each child will be prepared with
the following information about their plant.
1. What is its shape?
2. What color is it?
3. What part of the plant is it? (root, stem, leaf, fruit/flower)
4. What can be made with it?
Day 2 activity
1). Children share their
"What's in the Bag?" items individually. Allow three guesses before the
child tells the name of their plant.
2). Graphing activity
A). After each child introduces their plant, have them color in a section
on the overhead Graph
sheet for their plant part.
B). When the class is done, compare the results as to most and least parts
brought in.
3). Evaluation activity
A). Distribute the evaluation activity sheet- What
part am I?
B). Children will read sentences and fill in the correct plant part.
Modifications : Modifications will be made based on individual educational plans and student needs.
