Social Studies Lesson Plan: "There's Nuthin' To Do"

Title:  There's Nuthin' To Do, But Learn About History.

Grade Level(s):  6 - 8

Subjects:  Social Studies, Science, Language

Learner Objectives:

Time Frame:  5 to 10 Days

Materials: Computer (Internet ready), paper, pencil, wordprocessing software, pamphlets about history.

Technology Tools/Courseware: Access Internet sites to learn about tourist attractions.
                                                 Office 97 or other word processing program.
                                                 Pamphlets discussing topic of study.

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:  Day 1:  1. Introduce the activity by brainstorming tourist trails and other
                                    areas available to tourist in the county.
                                2. Search Parks to determine information about present sites for
                                    tourism.
                     Day 2:  1. Allow students to select from sites for tourism in the county,
                                     then make a list of attractions and facilities available for site
                                     selected.
                                 2. Create a list of tourist attractions available for the attraction
                                     selected.
                     Day 3:  1. Determine why railroad tracks were converted to trails.
                                         2. Research local tourist train site.
                     Day 4:  1. Explain the transition from production to tourism.
                                     (economic change)
                                 2. Select sites to view about Preston County to address report of
                                     economic change of area.  Resource site list:                      Day 5:   1. Have students phone or email individuals concerning history of
                                      tourist areas in county.
                                  2. Have students gather information about history of area using the
                                      internet and phone, then compile it into a database of  information
                                      dividing it into categories (ex. lodging, food, biking, hiking, etc.
                                      This may be a rough draft first.)
                     Day 6:   1. Have students create a database of information using the
                                      computer and database program about the County and a
                                      written report of findings (possible program may be
                                      Office 97 and Excel and Word).
                     Day 7:   1. Allow a day or two to present their findings from the Internet in
                                      class.
