Social Studies Lesson Plan: "There's Nuthin' To Do"
Title: There's Nuthin' To Do, But Learn About
History.
Grade Level(s): 6 - 8
Subjects: Social Studies, Science, Language
Learner Objectives:

The student will learn about the history of tourism in Preston
County.
-
The student will create a database of area with similar history
(coal, train
tracks).

The student will develop an appreciation for history as it
effects the economy of
today's life.

The student will search the Internet to discover history
of the area.
-
The student will develop a written report using the computer
and web sites
about a topic of their choice and then present an oral presentation.
Time Frame: 5 to 10 Days
Materials: Computer (Internet ready), paper, pencil,
wordprocessing software, pamphlets about history.
Technology Tools/Courseware: Access Internet sites
to learn about tourist attractions.
Office 97 or other word processing program.
Pamphlets discussing topic of study.
Teacher Notes:

Field Trip to areas being studied is optional, but very beneficial.

Wordprocessing skills/Database
should have been taught prior to lesson.
-
Have students create a report about their research much like
a Social Studies Fair Report.
-
Internet skills (search,
save, download) are beneficial.
-
Prior letter
writing skills should be covered.
-
For best results this lesson should be taught at the end
of the year during the last semester.
Procedures: Day 1: 1. Introduce the activity
by brainstorming tourist trails
and other
areas available to tourist in the county.
2. Search Parks to
determine information about present sites for
tourism.
Day 2: 1. Allow students to select from sites for tourism
in the county,
then make a list of attractions and facilities available
for site
selected.
2. Create a list of tourist attractions available for the attraction
selected.
Day 3: 1. Determine why railroad tracks were converted to
trails.
2. Research local tourist train
site.
Day 4: 1. Explain the transition from production to tourism.
(economic change)
2. Select sites to view about Preston
County to address report of
economic change of area. Resource site list:
Day 5: 1. Have students phone or email individuals concerning
history of
tourist areas in county.
2. Have students gather information about history of area using the
internet and phone, then compile it into a
database of information
dividing it into categories (ex. lodging, food, biking,
hiking, etc.
This may be a rough draft first.)
Day 6: 1. Have students create a database of information
using the
computer and database program about the County and
a
written report of findings (possible
program may be
Office 97 and Excel and Word).
Day 7: 1. Allow a day or two to present their findings
from the Internet in
class.
Modifications:

Allow students to work in teams of two or more.

Allow extra time for students who need it.
-
Assign a student to assist with typing if needed.
-
Allow those who wish to expand the probe as appropriate.

Possibly create a PowerPoint
presentation. (depending on student motivation and skills, see link)
Enrichment Activities:

County Commission Presentation of findings.

Presentation to entire class.

Develop a historical database of similarities of history
and activities available at different areas of the county.

Build a map of the area and determine appropriate locations
of tourist attractions.
