What's Inside A Tall Tale?

Lesson Two Plan

 
 


Grade Level: Second

Subjects: Language Arts, Technology, Music, Math

Learner Outcomes:

  • The students will recall characteristics of a tall tale.
  • The students will identify basic story elements of a tall tale.
  • The students demonstrate the technical knowledge required to begin creating a Power Point presentation about their tall tale.
  • The student will measure ingredients in a recipe.
  • Duration of Lesson: One class of 60 minutes

    Materials:  ( LOOK INSIDE )

    Technology Tools/Courseware: Teacher Notes: Procedures:

    1. Teacher leads class discussion about tall tales.   (Tall Tales are exaggerated stories. The main character is larger-than-life and tries to solve a specific problem).
    2. Teacher writes the story elements which students will be looking for in tall tales on the board:

    3. Teacher reads Steven Kellogg's version of Paul Bunyan.
    4. Teacher leads classroom discussion on the story elements found in Steven Kellogg's Paul Bunyan.  Teacher lists each on the board as they are discussed:     Characters, setting, beginning, middle and end. Teacher may choose to record information on a word processing program and project on data projector.
    5. Teacher explains that these findings can be presented in a Power Point presentation.
    6. Teacher shows Power Point presentation .
    7. Each cooperative group will read their own tall tale together twice in their groups.
    8. Teacher instructs students to look for tall tale story elements.
    9. Each cooperative group fills in a teacher made worksheet which lists tall tale story elements.
