Learner Outcomes:
1. The teacher will read two chapters aloud each day for a total of ten days.
2. The students will
listen to story and draw conclusions regarding characters, events,
setting, and purpose.
3. The students will be able to identify new vocabulary words each day.
4. The students will
be able to find the Ozark Mountain Range and the states which lie within
this mountain range.
5. The students will be able to determine the setting of the story.
6. The students will research the Cherokee Indians as to where they settled.
7. The students will
compare /contrast the climate, weather, between the two locations of the
Cherokee.
8. The students will be able to relate safety rules when hunting.
9. The students will be able to keep a daily journal of Billy's adventures.

Day 1
1. Introduce the book to the class. Discuss the setting of the book and the characters.
2. Locate the Ozark Mountains on the map. Use overhead projector.
3. List the states that are located within the Ozark Mountain Range.
4. Read chapters one and two of the book.
5. Guest: Local hunter with trained hunting dogs.
5. Discuss
vocabulary and complete worksheet.
A. Students will use dictionary to find definitions and answers to
the worksheet..
Day 2
1. Read chapters three and four of the book.
2. Determine that the
story takes place in Oklahoma by
finding the state that has Cherokee
County located in it. Use map on computer by using converter for TV, or
overhead
projector.
3. Discuss ways that
one could earn money today and compare to how one could earn money
several years ago.
4. Discuss vocabulary
and complete worksheet.
A. Students will use dictionary to find definitions and answers to the
word search.
Day 3
1. Read chapters five and six of the book
2. Research the Cherokee
Indians
A. Where where the Cherokee Indians located in Oklahoma?
B. Why were the Cherokees living in Oklahoma, since they were originally
Indians
which were located in the eastern United States?
3. Discuss and compare/contrast
the climate and weather the Cherokee had been accustom
to in Georgia and what the conditions were like in Oklahoma.
4. Guest speaker from the local Indian Organization.
5. Discuss vocabulary
and complete worksheet: unscramble the words.
A. Students will use dictionary to find answers to the worksheet.
Day 4
1. Read chapters seven and eight of the book
2. Discuss the responsibility of owning a pet
3. Department of Natural
Resources Conservation Officers to discuss hunting safety with
students.
4. Discuss vocabulary
and complete worksheet..
A. Students will use dictionary to find definitions and answers to
the word search.
Day 5
1. Read chapters nine and ten of the book
2. Discuss and compare the travel and hunting techniques to today and several years ago.
3. On map of Oklahoma find the capital of Oklahoma and make a red X.
4. On the map find Tahlequah and make a blue X.
5. Find the Arkansas River in northeastern Oklahoma and color it blue.
6. Discuss vocabulary
from these chapters. Students will complete matching worksheet
using the dictionary to find the answers.
7. Discuss vocabulary and
play around the world with words which have been introduced
thus far in the book.
