Patchwork On Parade
Lesson Five
(Unit Culmination)
Grade Level:  6

Subject: Math, Social Studies, English Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:

Duration of Lesson: 1-2 hours (may be extended to whole day)

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Students will need a computer and data projector in order to show the Power Point presentations called Code Quilts or Patchwork Patterns.

Teacher Notes:
The teacher may set up the display in the classroom or in a central location like the library.  Students should be involved in every aspect of the event, from planning, to set up, to serving as hosts and hostesses.

Procedures:
1.  The teacher and students will brainstorm how, when, and where the Patchwork on Parade event will take place.  There will be different sections of the event reflecting the Lessons, such as:
Patchwork Past - a display of quilts, quilt photos taken by students, and the interviews that the students conducted.
Patchwork Poetry - a display of the poems created by the students, and (if possible) a computer with the quilt poetry sites bookmarked.
Patchwork Pathway - a station where the Code Quilt Power Point can be viewed, the books on the Underground Railroad are displayed, and the student directional blocks may be seen.
Patchwork Patterns - a station where the Patchwork Patterns Power Point can be viewed, and the quilt blocks created by pairs of students can be displayed.

2.  Students should volunteer to serve as hosts/hostesses at the station of choice.  You may want several students to rotate through the stations if there are lots of students (such as middle school).

3.  Students will teach others about the information they have learned from the unit.

4.  The teacher will monitor all stations during the event.

Modifications:
Modifications may be made according to the student's IEP.

Enrichment Activities:
Guest speakers may be invited to bring quilts, conduct quilting lessons, or talk about their quilt memories.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Because this is the unit culmination, there is no evaluation necessary.
