You will need:

1 2-liter pop bottle

Scissors

Small pebble-like rocks

Water

Wide tape (duct tape preferred)

Measuring stick

Directions:

Cut the top off of the 2-liter bottle.

Put pebbles into the bottle of the 2-liter bottle.

Invert the top that was removed and place it into the 2-liter bottle.

  Secure it with tape.

Add water until it covers the pebbles in the bottom of the bottle.

It should look like this.

Something to think about.

Why was the lid inverted and returned to the top of the bottle? Why not leave it off?

What purpose do the rocks serve?

Why did we put water in the rain gauge? (Hint look at the bottom of the 2-liter bottle. How would you account for that irregular shape if you did not start with your water level above it?)

How will you determine the amount of rainfall? This will require some math. (just a little, don't panic)

You are ready to begin.

Place the rain gauge away from buildings or shelter of trees.

Check from time to time and measure the amount of rain fall.
