“The Paths the Moccasins Walked”

An Overview

A unit study of four great Native American Tribes from different regions of the United States  concluding with a powwow to share completed products.
Grade Level:  4th – 6th grades.

Subjects:  Reading, Social Studies, Language, Technology, Art, and Music.

Goal:  Students will grow in their appreciation and understanding of the culture of the Native Americans and also the effect the regional differences played in their lifestyles.

WV IGOs:  Reading Comprehension: 5.15, 5.16, 5.22, 5.27.  Social Studies: 5.26, 5.27, 5.32, 5.33, 5.46. Language:  5.154, 5.155.  Technology: 5.186.  Art: 5.19.  Music: 5.25, 5.27.  While these suggest 5th grade, it is noted that these are on a continuum 4th-6th grade.

Suggested Time:  Ten days.  This may vary depending upon the amount of time allocated per day and the number of activities selected.  Minimum 60 minutes per day with some assignments to be completed outside class time.
