Learner Outcome:

Students will locate data about geographic regions, traditional
housing, famous chiefs, customs/legends, and foods (Record information
on data collection chart using selected
reference sources).

Students will compare various aspects of the Iroquois with
other Native American tribes.
Time Frame: 2 days: In
each area, classes can do their part of the program.
Materials: Tapes –(about
Indian Folk tales), Books-(on Iroquois), Record or tape-(Indian dances),
9X12
construction paper, glue, scissors, crayons and poster board and dictionaries.
Technology Tools: Computer-(connected
to Internet), printer, VCR and TV, scan converter, tape player,
Microsoft PowerPoint, and overhead projector.
Teachers Note:

Students must have an acceptable use policy signed.

Teacher needs to set up folder with URLs for students to
start research.

Teacher will need to have papers copied for students:
a) Data chart to be completed. b) Copy of Glossary
words to be looked up. c) Copy of crossword puzzle.
d) Pictograph Symbols for animal hide paper.

Teacher will need to have the scan-coverter and VCR set up
to show the tape "American Indian Tales 1 & 2." Indian
Folk tales.

Teacher needs to have a collection of reference and story
books from the library on display for students research.

Teacher needs to have a record player to play the The
Authentic Indian Dances and Folklore record (or other Indian
dancer).

Find reference material for enrichment items. "North American
Indians", Creative Teaching Press, Inc.

Have transparencies as examples of comparison graph, pictograph
symbols.
-
Have sample of animal hide story paper completed.
Procedure:
Day
1:
1. Introduce the Unit.
a. On over head show the graph and how it's to be completed.
b. Introduce the Iroquois Indians.
2. Show the reading area ( Indian books displayed) for the
students to use for research.
3. With the scan converter demonstrate how to bring up the
folder on the computer
and use the URLs stored to do their research.
4. Have students use computer folder with saved URLs to research
the Iroquois Indians
and to fill out their charts.
5. Give the glossary word list to look up.
6. Present the tape "American Indian Tales 1 or 2. Use one
or two stories about Indians.
Day
2:
1. Have tape player and let the students hear the different
dances and then try one.
2. Word search or Crossword puzzle : can make your own puzzle.
3. Hand out Pictograph symbols found in the encyclopedia. Give
9X12 construction
paper for students to cut out animal hide shapes for pictograph symbols
story.
4. Using the animal hide shapes and the pictograph symbols
the students will write
a two or three sentence story.

Enrichment Activities:

Have a map of the United States for the students to locate
the different tribes during their research.

The students can make a bird mask for a special ceremony.

Try a recipe. Flat Bread.
