U Graphs

Learner Outcomes:
1). Students learn to use a graphing calculator to make a histogram
for a set of data.
2). Students use a graphing calculator to construct and interpret
box-and-whisker plots.
Time Frame:
Two 50-minute class periods.
Materials:
Water U Graph worksheet
Technology Tools/Courseware:
computers with Internet access, graphing calculators
Teacher Notes:
Students need to be trained to access the Internet and have signed an Acceptable
Use Policy. This activity may be started in a computer lab or on classroom
computers. Directions are written for the TI-82 or TI-83 graphing calculator.
Students should be familiar with the basic graphing calculator functions
and also have previous experience with both a histogram and box-and-whisker
plots.
Procedures: 1). Students access the URL and complete the survey.

3). Distribute graphing calculators.
4). Students complete activities on the Water U Graphs worksheet.
Modifications:
Students may assist each other or work in pairs with the graphing calculators.
Enrichment activities:
Students could collect water use data within their household for one week
and write a report based on their findings.

Completion of the Water U Graphs worksheet, rubric.
