Title: Follow the River
Grade Level: Eighth

Learner Outcomes:
Students will calculate an estimated length for six of the eighteen major
rivers of West Virginia.
Time Frame:
One 50-minute class.
Materials:
West Virginia Official State Highway Map, rulers, and string
Technology Tools/Courseware:
calculators, computers with Internet
Teacher Notes:
Students need to be trained to access the Internet and have signed an Acceptable
Use Policy. Students need to be familiar with solving proportions
and working with calculators. Students will work in pairs.
Procedures:
1). Each student pair is given a West Virginia Official State Highway
Map, a
calculator, a piece of string, and a ruler.
2). Students are to calculate an estimated length of at least six of the
eighteen major rivers of West Virginia using the given tools.
3). Students will complete the River Length Table with information calculated.
4). Students will check estimated lengths by going to Huntington
District Corps of Engineers and/or Pittsburgh
District Corps of Engineers.
Modifications:
The teacher to assist all ability levels will pair students.
Enrichment activities: 1). Students could plan and compute complete costs for a trip along one of the major rivers of West Virginia.
2). Students could explore
the navigation maps provided by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington
District and Pittsburgh District.
Evaluation/Assessment:
Completion of the River Length Table, rubric.
