  • Students will gain background knowledge of daily lives of the colonists.
  • Students will research the taxes enacted on the colonists using the Internet.
  • Students will be able to put the Taxation Acts in chronological order using a timeline.
  • Students will use manipulatives to simulate how the colonists were taxed by the British.

6 days ( 30-45 minutes per day)

Procedures:

Day One
  1. Have students complete K and W section of a KWL chart.
  2. In pairs visit the site that tells about early life in the colonies.
  3. Students may add to the W and L section of the KWL chart.
Day Two
  1. Review previous lesson.
  2. In pairs, visit timeline on Internet.
  3. Students take notes on word processor about acts put upon the colonists from 1764 - 1775.
  4. Students must have at least six acts in their notes.
  5. Students continue adding to L section of KWL chart.
Day Three
  1. Review notes with students.
  2. Students generate a timeline for the acts between 1764-1775.
  3. Must list six acts on timeline.
  4. A brief description of each act is required.
  5. Print one copy of the timeline to turn in for a grade.
  6. Students continue adding to L section of KWL chart.
Day Four
  1. Refer to token system transparency for directions to class.
  2. Begin token system and use for two days.
  3. Review student information kept in folder.
  4. Return timelines to students.
  5. Discuss results.
  6. Students may add to L section of KWL chart.
Day Five
  1. Distribute reward tokens for the day.
  2. View PowerPoint lesson on taxation acts.
  3. Make sure all materials are in student folder ready to turn in at end of day.
  4. Continue token system for remaining of day.
  5. Discuss lesson as a whole class.

 

Modifications:
Modifications should follow the student's IEP.
Pair special needs student with regular education student.

 

Enrichment Activities:

          
Student may write a journal entry from a colonist's perspective telling his/her feelings about the taxation acts.
