Day One

  1. Introduce the Intolerable or Coercive Acts using a computer and projector to project this  internet site.
  2. Discuss effects of these acts on every day life of colonists.
  3. Provide scavenger hunt for each student.
  4. Use internet site to complete the scavenger hunt.

Day Two

  1. Introduce the following suggested vocabulary from Buttons for General Washington:  Quaker, headquarters, spy, code, decode, mission, nervous, stiffly, prowling, and gasps.
  2. Read aloud  and discuss Buttons for General Washington.
  3. Using suggested vocabulary, students may create a vocabulary word search using Puzzlemaker.com.
  4. Students complete Accelerated Reader test.

Day Three

  1. Divide the class in half. 
  2. Half the class will list characteristics of the loyalists and the other half will list the characteristics of the patriots.
  3. Bring the class back together and create a class T Chart of characteristics of loyalists and patriots.

Day Four

  1. Review the use of secret codes in Buttons for General Washington.
  2. Review letter writing format with students.
  3. Students will write a friendly letter to General Washington, using the rubric as a guide.
  4. Divide the class into partners.
  5. Students will peer edit their partner's letter.  
Day Five
  1. Using the invisible ink recipe, have students create their own ink.
  2. Using the ink and a toothpick, the students will write a message to General Washington between the lines of their letter.
  3. Students will then give their secret coded letter to a classmate to read aloud.
  4. Teacher will collect letters and evaluate using the rubric.


Modifications:
Modifications should follow student's IEP.  

Special needs students may work with a peer partner on scavenger
hunt, T Chart activity and Accelerated Reader test.


Enrichment Activities:
Students can develop their own code and assume the role of a spy in the Revolutionary War.
