Lesson 5:  American Revolution PowerPoint Presentation

Learner Outcomes:
  • Students will create a PowerPoint  using their research about the American Revolution.
  • Students will present their PowerPoint presentation to the class.

  • Prior PowerPoint knowledge is required. (Click PowerPoint for a tutorial on PowerPoint.)
  • Students will need worksheets and information from the last four lessons for this lesson.
  • A lab setting with a projection device is helpful when modeling the features of PowerPoint and working on their presentations.
  • Make sure the students have an Acceptable Use Policy on file before going to the Internet.

Day One

  1. Give each student a Causes of the American Revolution PowerPoint Assignment worksheet.
  2. Discuss the requirements of each slide.
  3. Use a computer and projector to show a teacher created sample of a PowerPoint presentation.
  4. Allow students to create a rough draft of their 5 slides on paper. (They need their information from the four previous lessons.)
  5. Teacher proofreads the student's rough drafts of the slides.

Day Two

  1. Students enter PowerPoint.
  2. Using a computer and projector, model adding slides to the presentation.
  3. Students choose 5 slides, using their rough draft as a template.
  4. Students begin inputting their text into their 5 slides. (Students should write complete sentences with correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.)
  5. Monitor students and answer questions.
Day Three

  1. Review and model adding  backgrounds and changing font size and colors using a computer and projector.
  2. Students will add backgrounds for all five slides. (Students should use the backgrounds that are loaded into PowerPoint unless they are advanced students.)
  3. Students will change font size and colors as desired.
  4. Monitor students and answer questions.
Day Four

  1. Review inserting pictures from file using a computer and projector.
  2. Students will insert at least two pictures. (Students should use pictures that are loaded into PowerPoint unless they are advanced students.)
  3. Review inserting sound using a computer and projector.
  4. Students will insert at least one sound clip. (Students should use sound clips that are loaded into PowerPoint unless they are advanced students.)
  5. Monitor students and answer questions.
Day Five

  1. Review PowerPoint presentation assignment with students.
  2. Give each student a copy of  Causes of the American Revolution PowerPoint Assignment worksheet.
  3. Put students in pairs and let them check each others presentations, using the assignment worksheet as a guide.
  4. Students will correct their PowerPoint presentations based upon their peers recommendations.
Day Six

  1. Students will present their PowerPoint presentations to the class using the computer and projector.
  2. Teacher will use the PowerPoint rubric to assess the students' PowerPoints.


Modifications:

Modifications should follow the student's IEP.

Students with special needs can create two slides instead of five. (A title slide and one slide that tells the four causes of the American Revolution.)

Peer tutors can also assist students.



Enrichment Activities:
Students can customize their PowerPoint presentation by doing custom animation.

Advanced students can use the Internet to search for clip art, backgrounds, and sounds instead of using the Power Point files.
