book and tape.
Enlarged pictures of a
fly and spider
A copy of the poem "If
a Spider Could Talk".
1 set of bug domino for
every four students.

Tape recorder

Internet
CD Rom (for enrichment)
Teachers Note: Send
letter home and ask for a donation of a live spider housed in a safe container.
Procedure:
Read
the Poem "If a Spider could talk".
Display
enlarged copy of spider, count the legs.
Listen
to tape recording and view the book "The Roly Poly Spider".
Display
enlarged picture of fly and count the legs.
Note
difference between spider and fly.
Pass
out bug dominoes cards- 1 set for every four students. Students name
identifiable bugs / arachnids, then turn them face down and mix them up.
Each player picks up 5 pictures. All remaining dominoes are left
turned over so pictures do not show. One is turned over and players
take turns matching the number of "bugs" on the domino. If a player
does not have a match, a new domino is taken from the middle pile.
Play is continued until a player uses up all of his or her dominoes.
Enrichment Activities:
Listen
to and learn lyrics and motions to The Eency, Weency Spider/ "Itsy Bitsy
Spider"
Create
own insects with Kraft stem wiggle eyes egg cartons, construction paper,
string, etc. Identify rhyming words in stories, poems and songs.
Using
a piece of plastic spouting and a plastic spider act out story including
washing the spider out by slowly pouring water over spout (which is held
over a tray or dish pan).
Have
students find pictures of how rain can affect people (dress, flood, sporting
events, shelter, gardens, etc.) then note how can affect other animals.
Successfully
plays "Bug Domino" game.
When
shown a picture of arachnid or insect can identify correctly by noting
body parts.
