Procedures:

Listen to book on the tape.
Discuss if humans could really eat what the old lady ate.
Identify food groups, pointing out that the old lady only ate meats and would really need other things to be healthy.
Make fly soup using plastic flies, spices, and canned vegetables provided by parents.  Students add own contribution to the pot. Don't forget to add the plastic flies after soup begins to simmer!
While soup is simmering, make old lady and animals.  Students each color the old lady and the animals she eats, cut out and tape zip lock bag to back of lady.
Listen to song again and "feed" each animal to the puppet.
Eat soup and watch Muppet video of "The Old Lady That Swallowed The Fly"

Modifications:
The students that cannot perform fine motor skill will have their artwork cut and colored for them.
The students that have food allergies will be given an alternative soup.

Enrichment Activities:
Students cut out pictures of food from grocery ads and "feed" to the old lady. She will keep those that are healthy but "spit out" junk food.
Make up or tell others verses that have heard such as I know and old lady who swallowed a pig.  She danced a jig when she swallowed the pig.  Use the       student’s versions to make a new book illustrated by class.
