Teacher Notes:
-
Reserve the school computer lab for 4 days.
Be sure Internet access is available.
-
Assure that all students have signed and understood
the Acceptable Use Policy.
-
Secure Library use as backup.
-
Collect several magazines, newspapers, and other
sources to be cut up for collage.
-
Advise students to be aware of legal drug advertisements
in various media's such as TV, movies, songs, etc. They may begin collecting
references to legal drug use and promotion in the United States.
Procedures:
Assignment #1:
-
Given a list
of terms ,the students will visit Word
Central to define and write a sentence for each term.
-
Students will write a sentence on how these
terms relate to addiction.
-
Students will discuss answers in small groups.
-
Groups will generate a list of "legal drugs"
that may be misused.
Assignment #2:
-
Students will go to Narconaon
and and list the most
important facts about addiction and how it happens.
-
Students will be divided into four groups and
assigned one of the following topics to each: anabolic steroids, cigarette
smoking, alcohol, or inhalants.

Students will go to NIDA
and click on "Information on drugs of abuse".
-
Students will find information
on a given list of facts.
-
Groups will make a presentation to class on
assigned topic.
Assignment # 3:
-
Using magazines and newspapers each student
will create an 8x11 collage on "How Does Society Promote Drug Use". They
may include student generated information from TV shows, movies,
radio station disc jockeys, or songs.

Students can access Microsoft Word in order
to create a stop addiction advertisement.
-
Students can use WordARt and Autoshapes to create
visuals.
Modifications:
-
Since access to certain Internet web sites may
not be available at one time or another, it is advisable to have dictionaries
and library access available.
-
IEP modifications should be considered in all
assignments.
Evaluation assessments:
-
For assignment #1 the teacher will give a vocabulary
test using assigned terms.

For assignment # 2 the students will be graded
on the answers to the list of facts
