Lesson 2: Smoking Tobacco: A Second Piece of the Puzzle

Learner Outcomes:

Students will demonstrate proficiency in locating and using sites on the Internet.
Students will comprehend concepts related to disease prevention.
Students will identify the physical and mental/emotional problems associated with tobacco use.
Students will describe short-term and long-term health effects of tobacco use.

Duration of Lesson:

Assignment #1: One 50-minute class period
Assignment #2: Two or three-50 minute class periods

Materials:

Worksheet of specific questions about tobacco use
Internet research information and list of sites

Technology Tools/Courseware:

Computer Lab access,
Internet access,
Printer
Power Point presentation
Word Processing Program

Teacher Notes:

Assure all students have signed and understand the Acceptable Use Policy form.
Reserve the Computer Lab for 3-4 consecutive days.
Ascertain that the Internet is accessible.
Before entering Internet sites, review the sites to determine if they are still available.

Procedures:
Assignment #1:

Introduce lesson with Power Point presentation on tobacco and a discussion of the physical and mental/emotional problems associated with tobacco use.
Given a set of specific questions concerning tobacco use, students will visit the following web sites to find the answers.

Assignment #2:

Given a list of Internet sites, students will research at least five tobacco-related sites. Using a word processing program, students will write a 500-600 word summary of the information they have read. Summarizations should include information concerning physical and mental/emotional problems associated with tobacco use, long-term and short-term health effects, and cessation programs and medications.

Modifications:

Assignments for students with IEPs may need to be modified by the teacher.

Evaluation/Assessment:

To evaluate the first assignment, assign point values to the worksheet questions.
The second assignment should be evaluated with the following rubric.

Enrichment Activity:

b. How many WV children/young adults under the age of 18 start smoking each year in WV?

c. How many packs of cigarettes are sold illegally to underage smokers in WV each year? Remember that this does not include smokeless tobacco sales.

3. Return to the top of the page, and go to the "State Settlement Overview," and answer the following questions.

a. How much money has the tobacco industry paid West Virginia through December of 2000?

b. How much of the settlement is being spent on prevention programs to reduce tobacco use?

c. How much money does the CDC recommend be spent annually on tobacco use prevention programs in West Virginia?

Assignment #2:

    Visit five sites associated with tobacco use. Look for information concerning short and long-term effects of tobacco use, mental/emotional problems associated with tobacco use, and current cessation programs and medications available. Using a word processing program, compose a well-written 500-600 word summary of the information you have read. The finished document should be double-spaced. You may visit sites other than those listed below. Please list all the sites that you visit.
     If you have time to earn extra credit, visit additional sites and write a 50 word summerization of the site. Each extra summary will be worth 25 points.
