Learner Outcomes:

• Students will be able to identify common steroids.
• Students will be able to discuss steroids, their use, their problems, and their dangers.
• Students will be able to identify common addictive drugs such as caffeine and/or alcohol.

• Assignment #1:  Steroids: 2 or 3 - 50 minute class periods (for research), 1 to 2 additional days for panel discussion/debate

• Assignment #2:  Addictive Drugs:  2 or 3 - 50 minute class periods (for research), 1 to 2 additional days for Power Point presentations

Teacher Notes:

• Be sure each student has signed and understood the Acceptable Use Policy for your school.
• Be sure to reserve computer lab for 4 or 5 days.  All days do not have to be consecutive, but should be pairs of them should be back to back with a break between.
• Be sure computer lab has Internet access for all students.

ASSIGNMENT #1:

• Discuss with students the term "steroids" and commonly used steroids.
• Have students research web sites that deal with steroids, their use, their problems, and their dangers.
• Students should then discuss this information in a debate format or panel discussion within the classroom.

• Discuss addictive drugs, focusing on caffeine and alcohol.
• Students should research what foods and drinks contain caffeine.
• Students should also understand the relationship between percent alcohol and proof information on labels
• Students will research either caffeine or alcohol and make a Power Point presentation about their findings.

Modifications:

Since access to certain Internet sites may not be available at one time or another, it is advisable to have more than one site listed for students.
Depending on the student's abilities/IEPs, the teacher may need to modify individual assignments.
