Title:  Storm Safety

• Students will learn about the danger of lightning safety and how to protect themselves.

• 2 - 45 minute periods

• Mats for enrichment activity

• Computer
• Internet
• Literature Audio tape

• Teacher will also expose students to the career of meteorology.
• Teacher may want to take this lesson into the area of tornadoes.

• Students will discuss with teacher the experiences they have had with thunderstorms through a classroom discussion.
• Students will view Fact Sheet ofThunderstorm/Lightning.
• Students will view pictures of Safety Positionsto be taken during periods of  lightning.
• Students will learn scientific information concerning the nature of lightning and view local maps of weather.

Modifications:

• Possibly do group work on Internet exploration or do as a whole group.

Enrichment Activities:

• Listen to audio tape of Thunder Cake.  (Available from Harcourt Brace 2nd Grade Treasury of Literature collection).
• Lightning Tag

Evaluation/Assessment:

• Students will take the lightning safety position and verbally describe to teacher the reasoning behind the precaution they are taking. Students should specify explanations for the placement of their body parts.
