Teacher Notes:
-
Only students who have demonstrated
that they can ride a bike safely will be permitted to ride on the "Rails
to Trails".

Students need permission forms
from parents to go on field trip to North Bend State Park to "Rails to
Trails".
-
Need bus for transportation.
Do a transportation request to the Board of Education.
-
Need parent volunteers to chaperone
field trip.
-
Parent permission for students
to use Internet.
-
Have poster paper and markers/crayons
ready for students.
-
Need to have scan converter connected
to computer and T.V.
Procedures:
-
The teacher will introduce to
the students bicycle
safety tips. The
teacher will print these safety tips for each student as a handout.
-
After the teacher has discussed
these safety tips the teacher will go to "Rad
Rider" and introduce each of these characters: Rad Rider, Mayor
Taggert, Professor Henry Hardrive, and Billy "The Kid" Williams.

Read the comic book "It's
Rad Rider Safety Cycler!" using scan converter and T.V.
-
After the students have read the
comic book they will take a safety
test using the test on the Internet or the teacher can print test for
the students.

The lesson will be wrapped up
by having an area guest speaker visit the class to demonstrate the steps
taken before riding one's bike.
Modifications:
-
For special needs students, follow
their IEPs.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students will make posters creating
public safety announcements to share with the community at the bike rodeo.
-
The students can participate
in the community rodeo.
-
Take a trip to North Bend State
Park to ride bicycles on the "Rails
to Trails".
Evaluation/Assessment:
-
The students will demonstrate
hand turn signals when bicycling.
-
Students will be evaluated by
using an assessment from the Internet.
-
Students will perform a pre-test
checklist for a bicycle verbally stating what components they are checking.
