Lightning Tag

This game is really fun and reinforces the importance of taking shelter during storms.  The teacher selects two students to be the "bolts of lightning".  These students should wear a colored sash, so the remaining students can recognize the taggers.  Mats that can be folded into a triangular tunnel shape should be set up around the room.  The mats that have velcro at their ends work GREAT for this activity.  Once the game begins, the "bolts of lightning" try to tag the other students.  Students may take shelter inside the mats.  While they are inside the tunnel, they should take the safety position for lightning.  Students should not stay in the shelter for more than 10 seconds.  Then, they must return to the storm and seek shelter again.  The teacher may want to set up cones around the ends of the shelters.  This would keep the lightning from easily tagging students as they exit the shelter.  If someone is tagged, then they become the new lightning bolt.  Have fun and don't get zapped!!!
