Learner Outcomes:

1)  Students will locate assigned URL sites for tobacco and smoking research.
2)  Students will create a hyperlink table of websites using Microsoft Word

Duration of Lesson:         90 minutes 

Materials:

Chalkboard or dry erase board with writing utensil


Technology Tools/Courseware: 

Computer for each student 
Internet Access 
Microsoft Office Word 97 version or above 


Teacher Notes:
Secure computer laboratory access. 
Make sure that all students have signed county/school Acceptable Use Policy.
Assign "Does Smoking Make You COOL in Our School?"   survey.

Procedures:

1)  List on the whiteboard or chalkboard specific sites for research regarding smoking, health issues among teenage smokers, and tobacco use in general.  The list should include the following sites, but is not limited to these sites:

2)  Open Microsoft Word
3)  Click Table, Insert Table. 
4)  In the Insert Table dialog box, type 2 in the Number of Columns.  Click OK. 
5)  Type "Website" in the first column.  Press the Tab key. 
6)  Type "Address" in the second column.  Press the Tab key. Open the Internet.  Keep both applications open on the Taskbar. 
7)  In the table you created in Microsoft Word, type in the title of the first website written on the board.  Press the Tab key. 
8)  Do a search from the home page of the browser for the first website.  In the home page search box, type in the name of the organization you are searching for.  Scroll down until you find a link that matches the organization you are searching for.  Click on it to see the URL.  After choosing the best link to the website you are searching for, highlight and right click in the address bar to copy the URL.
9)  Return to the table you created and paste the URL in the address column of the first website.  Press the Tab key. 
10)  Repeat this process for the additional websites. 
11)  Students should locate two websites on their own to add to their hyperlink table. 
12)  Select the first row.  Center the words "Website" and "Address".  Change
the font color and size. 
13)  With the first row still selected, open the Tables and Borders toolbar. 
Choose 25% gray from the fill color pick list. 
14)  Save the document to disk with a unique name defining the hyperlink table. 
15)  Assign for homework "Does Smoking Make You COOL in Our School?"

Possible special education modifications include the following: 

For physically impaired students: 

If available, use a touch screen. 
Use a trackball or IntelliMouse.


For mentally impaired students: 

Allow for additional time when necessary. 
When necessary, place students in cooperative learning groups. 
For visually impaired students: 
Increase the size of the font. 
*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements.

  • Students can practice changing the properties of the Hyperlink Table using the  Tables and Borders toolbar.
