Learner Outcomes:

1)  Students will learn that nicotine is the drug that causes the physical addiction to cigarettes.
2)  Students will recognize that smokers use tobacco to avoid nicotine withdrawal and the signs of withdrawal.
3)  Students will be able to retrieve information about tobacco usage from the Internet.

Duration of Lesson:    90 minutes

Materials:

Chalkboard or whiteboard with writing utensil

Technology Tools/Courseware:

        Computer for each student
        Internet Access
        LCD Projector

Teacher Notes:

Secure computer laboratory access.
Make sure that all students have signed county/school Acceptable Use Policy.
The Hands Off Tobacco CD is distributed through Fairmont General Hospital Inc.

Procedures:

1)    Give students a brief introduction to the lesson stating the final learner outcomes.
2)   Focus Activity:Have students tell about a habit they have such as biting their nails.  Have them explain why they continue their habit, even though it may not be desirable.  Explain to students that smoking is similar to these habits, only worse because of the addictive drug nicotine.
3)  Allow students to brainstorm aloud the reasons people decide to smoke.  List these reasons on the board.
4)  List specific facts on the board regarding nicotine.

b)    Use Smoking Facts Handout 14  - Health : Making Life Choices
5)  Find information from the following Internet sources: 6)  Using Microsoft Word, list 15 facts about tobacco use based on the information you find.
7)  Give students the Users Are Losers Quiz.

Modifications:

Possible special education modifications include the following:

For physically impaired students:

If available, use a touch screen.
Use a trackball or IntelliMouse.
For mentally impaired students:
Allow for additional time when necessary.
When necessary, place students in cooperative learning groups.


For visually impaired students:

Provide large print worksheets.
*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements.
