1)    Students will study and understand how smoking damages the human body.
2)    Students will recognize the effects of smoke on the lungs, the heart, and the circulatory system.
3)    Students will cite reasons that identify why smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable death in America today.
4)    Students will research tobacco using assigned URLs.
5)    Students will access information from the Hands Off Tobacco CD

Duration of Lesson:    90 minutes

Materials: 

Coffee stirrers or drinking straws for each student

Hands Off Tobacco CD


Teacher Notes:
Secure computer laboratory access.
Make sure that all students have signed county/school Acceptable Use Policy.
The Hands Off Tobacco CD is distributed through Fairmont General Hospital Inc.

Procedures:

1)  Focus activity:  Ask students if they have had any relatives or friends who have died or been sick from smoking-related problems.  Describe how the illness effected the individual and how long the person had been smoking.
2)  Background information:    Lecture notes are available from Health:  Making Life Choices, pgs. 377-381.  or use any other source available for basic information.
3)  Hands Off Tobacco CD

  • Teacher will load CD and project the computer screen with the LCD projector for all students to see.
  • From the teacher menu items, teacher will go to Dirty Rotten Truth and  click on the truth about tobacco ads.
  • Click on each picture to learn about the effects of tobacco on the body.
  • Click on the menu.
  • Click on the chemicals found in tobacco.
  • Click on each picture to find out about each chemical.
  • Click on the menu, go to Virtual Autopsy.
  • Click on autopsy of a smoker's lung.
  • Go through numbers 1-7.
  • Click on the menu, go to Games & Activities.
  • Click on impaired breathing activity and follow the instructions.  This activity simulates emphysema.
4)  Give Killers That Travel in Packs Quiz.

Modifications:

Possible special education modifications include the following:

For physically impaired students:

If available, use a touch screen.
Use a trackball or IntelliMouse.
For mentally impaired students:
Allow for additional time when necessary.
When necessary, place students in cooperative learning groups.
For visually impaired students:
Provide large print worksheets.
*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements.
