I Don't Want to Wear Your Hand-Me-Downs!!

1)  The student will learn the results of exposure to secondhand smoke.
2)  The student will gain knowledge of the smoking statistics in the state of 
West Virginia.

Duration of Lesson:    90 minutes

     Internet Research Worksheet

Technology Tools/Courseware:

    Computer for each student
    Computer Laboratory Access
    Projection Device
    Internet Access
    CD Rom Entitled Hands Off Tobacco

Teacher Notes:

Secure computer laboratory access for class.
The Hands Off Tobacco CD is distributed through Fairmont General Hospital Inc.
Make sure that all students have signed both the county/school Acceptable Use Policy.
Have projection device set up with CD rom displaying appropriate location.
Vocabulary:
        Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS):  The combination of exhaled mainstream smoke and side stream smoke that enters the air and may be inhaled by other people.

Procedures:

1)  As an introduction to the lesson, discuss the problem of secondhand smoke in our society. (As a possible resource, refer to pages 384 and 385 in the textbook "Health:  Making Life Choices" for discussion.)
2) Discuss current laws in your community prohibiting smoking in public buildings.
3) Go over the definition of Environmental Tobacco Smoke.
4) Using a projection device, use the  Hands Off Tobacco CD  to display the section entitled "The Numbers Don't Lie".  This will inform students of current West Virginia smoking statistics.  Discuss this as a group.
5) Using a computer and projection device, go to the following website:

6) Discuss the information contained at this site as a class.
7) Give students Internet Research Worksheet to complete.

9) Collect the worksheet for grading.

For physically impaired students:

If available, use a touch screen. 
Use a trackball or intellimouse.
For mentally impaired students:
Reduce the number of questions on worksheet.
Create a bookmark or link directly to Internet site.
When necessary, place student(s) in cooperative learning group(s).
For visually impaired students:
Provide large-print worksheet.
Increase the text size on Internet.
