BUSINESS/MARKETING
CAREER CLUSTER

Business careers include a wide variety of occupations and professions from the entry-level clerical and secretarial jobs to the highest level of administrative and managerial positions.  These areas require varied levels of ability, skill, and educational preparation.  The minimum educational requirement, the high school diploma, is required for all careers.  A four-year college degree is required for others.

Many careers are available in the areas of accounting, business administration, finance, real estate, insurance, sales, merchandising, secretarial and clerical skills.  Some of these jobs involve making decisions and supervising the activities of employees, while others provide support services and assistance to executives, administrators and managers.

Administrative Support:
Office administrative support workers use problem solving and administrative skills to perform a wide range of activities including office, project and human resource management.  Administrative support prepares workers for a wide range of activities to ensure business activities run smoothly.  Often office workers manage offices for the executive team.  These individuals also obtain employment with organizations that use computer software to process, manage and communicate information.  Duties may include systems maintenance supports, sales, training and business applications design and implementation.

Management and Marketing:
Business managers and owners use their skills in supervision, team leadership, operations planning, quality assurance, logistics, health and safety, human resources management and inventory/material management to improve the productivity and profitability of business enterprises.  Business management majors desire to own or manage business.  Leaders in this field normally are the key decision-makers in the business world.  Business managers operate businesses for other persons or companies, or serve this function as independent contractors.  Entrepreneurs take all the risks and receive all the rewards for providing their products and/or services to other companies or to the ultimate consumer.

Marketing allows individuals to utilize marketing and management principles, practices and concepts involved in business activities that direct the transfer of goods and the acquisition of services from producer to consumer.  Individuals may work from point of purchase to the manufacturers in a variety of jobs within the market channels.
