Title: Planning a Health and Wellness Fair

Grade Level: 7

Subjects:  Vocational/Technical, Language Arts, Health

Learner Outcomes: 
Working together in cooperative groups students will:

  • Invite various community health care providers.
  • Be responsible for the logistics of the day
  • Create brochures
  • Organize the layout of booths
  • Make posters
  • Form a hospitality committee
Duration of Lesson: Two weeks - 50 minute classes

Materials: Poster board, various colors of paper, tables, internet consent, art supplies, graphing paper, electrical cords (for booths)

Technology Tools/Courseware: Computers, word processor software, clip art, equipment as needed by presenters

Teacher Notes:  After determining all of the aspects of the fair, jobs are divided with students taking charge of various areas.  A hospitality committee is also formed with the main responsibility being to take care of our guest presenters. Invitations have been mailed and responses received prior to this stage of planning. 

Procedures:

  • Divide students into small groups
  • Groups are assigned various jobs that are due at different times (crews)
  • Within each group, jobs are assigned
  • Each group responsible for creating a brochure 
  • Brainstorm to determine what jobs need to be done on what timeline (graph paper layout of booths, schedule, etc. -- previous to day of fair; tables, refreshments, equipment needed -- day of fair)


Modifications: IEP considerations, peer tutoring

Enrichment Activities: Students will brainstorm for overlooked details in preparation.

Evaluation/Assessment: Student products, observations, class participation
