Title: 'Pathways' to Success

Grade Level (s): :8 and 9

Subject(s): Vocational/ Technical, English/ Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Learner Outcomes: The student will:

• Identify the three 'pathways' of careers and explain the differences ( entry, skilled, and professional ).
• Become familiar with the twenty-one major areas under the six clusters.

Materials: Teacher Power Point, handouts, and TV/VCR/PC w/scan converter or data projector.

Technology Tools/Courseware: Microsoft Office ( Power Point ) used by the teacher.

Teacher Notes:

• Students need to be reminded of proper listening skills during Power Point presentation.
• If other teachers would like to download this presentation to edit , use this link.

• Day One :Introduce ' Pathways' and 'Majors' via short power point presentation ( best viewed by Internet Explorer) by teacher. Divide blackboard into three columns - label one column 'entry', one column 'skilled', and one column 'professional'. Students will brainstorm careers and the teacher or recorder will place them in the appropriate columns. Students will discuss which clusters and majors each job belongs in.
• Complete Analyze Self Worksheet for homework.

Modifications: Students with learning needs can be placed with a 'buddy' who can assist with this activity.
Students with visual needs can be placed closer to the blackboard during this activity.

Enrichment Activities: Advanced students can log onto ECOS;  using the 'College Major' screen they can research three 'major' career areas. Students will then provide an oral report to the rest of the students for review.
Students will have available the video series Real LIfe 101 to view throughout this lesson.  Additional information on the videos is available from the above link.

Evaluation/Assessment: Class participation ( rated according to the discretion of the teacher ).
