Title: What Kind of Life Will You Construct For Yourself ?

Grade Level (s): 8 and 9

Subject(s): Vocational/ Technical, English, Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Learner Outcomes: The student will:

• Research career clusters of Engineering & Technical, Science & Natural Resources, and Fine Arts & Humanities. Find pathway and major of interest for each cluster using referenced Internet sites.
• Complete one worksheet for each cluster covered in this lesson to include information on pathway, major, job description, personal characteristics and interests, educational background needed and average career salaries.

Materials: Computers with Internet access, worksheets and writing tools.

Technology Tools/Courseware: Computers with internet access, Microsoft Office ( Excel )-

Teacher Notes:

• Students must have a signed 'Acceptable Use Policy' ( AUP) form to legally browse the Internet.
• Teacher needs to observe students to assure on task/responsible Internet behavior.

Procedures:

• Day One - Students will receive worksheets to complete and a list of referenced web sites for the three clusters covered in this lesson.  Allow students this class session time to browse the Internet for information to complete their worksheets to include: pathway, major, job description, personal characteristics and interests, educational background needed and average career salaries.
• Day Two - Students will finish this task and voluntarily share the information they have found with peers and teacher.

Modifications: Students with learning needs can work with a ' buddy' or other students who are more proficient with computer functions. Students with visual needs may need screen adaptations with font size, etc., or allow 'buddy' students to read information to them.

Enrichment Activities: Advanced students can be given this assignment at an earlier time to prepare a chart or graph of these clusters and the potential career choices to share with peers and teacher.

Evaluation/Assessment: Worksheets completed for this lesson will be added to the ongoing Portfolio collection for this unit.
