Title: Elements of Medieval Romance Grade Levels:  Nine through Twelve Subjects: English/Language Arts

• The students will read “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”
• The students will participate in the discussion of the meaning of the poem
• The students will write a poem about a knight incorporating elements of medieval romances

Materials:  Computer Lab Paper and Writing Utensil Visit The Sir Gawain Room for a brief synopsis of the poem: "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" translated by Marie Borrof
Technology Tools/Course Work: Computer Lab  Internet Site The Sir Gawain Room

Teacher notes:

• The teacher should become familiar with the elements of a medieval romance
• The teacher should review the poem in advance
• The teacher needs to determine how students will be divided into groups of four
• The teacher should gather the above needed materials ahead of time and prepare

• The teacher will discuss the elements of a medieval romance (see elements worksheet)
• The teacher will direct the student to The Sir Gawain Room where the student will read a brief analysis of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”
• The student will identify characteristics of a medieval romance in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”
• The teacher will lead the discussion of the characteristics in the poem
• The teacher will discuss the qualities of a chivalrous knight
• The teacher needs to divide students into groups of three
• The teacher will instruct the students to write a poem about a knight incorporating four elements of a medieval romance

 

• Teacher should establish cooperative groups in such a way that all students should reach a level of success

• Use the Internet to find other poems that incorporate the elements of medieval romance

• Evaluation of poems based on effort and the completion of the poem
