Lesson Three:
                             T1-73 Sea Animal Graphics

Grade Level:  6

Subject:  Math, English, Writing, and Art

Learner Outcomes:

Duration of the lesson:  Three 45 minutes lessons

Materials:  graph paper

Technology Tools/Courseware:  One T1-73 graphing calculator per student

Teacher notes:

Procedures:
1. The students will view the first half of the video, Jewels of the Caribbean Sea .

2. Students will write a haiku poem about their sea animal.
    Example:
          Dolphins in the sea
    As blue as the summer sky
        Smiles at you and me!

3. Students will draw their sea animals on graphing paper.

4. Students will number each of these points.

5. Students will determine x and y coordinates for each point. These points
    are to be recorded on a sheet of paper.

6. Students are to turn the T1-73 calculator on and clear the home screen.

7  Press the [LIST] button.

8. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the first
    unnamed list.  Press [ENTER].

9. Use the TEXT function to name the list "x".   [2nd] [TEXT].  Use the arrow keys and
    [ENTER] to select letters.  When you’re finished, choose DONE. Press [ENTER] to
    select DONE, then press it a second time to name the list.

10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to name a list "Y’.

11. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor into the first blank line of line "X".  Enter the
      first X coordinate from the graph.  Continue by entering the remaining X coordinates.
      Do the same with the Y coordinates.

12. Activate the FORMAT function by pressing [2nd] [ZOOM].  Verify that all settings on the LEFT side are selected.  If they are not, use the arrow keys and [ENTER]  to select them.

13. Press the [WINDOW] button.  Use this function to set-up the graphing window.  Look at the graph paper and determine the axis setting (minimum x value, maximum x value,
scale of the x axis, minimum y value, maximum y value, scale of the y axis).  Enter these
values into the calculator.  Do NOT change the Delta X setting.  It changes automatically
as the window settings are changed.  If you are using a large graph paper, use the
window setting below.  If not, you will have to decide what window settings to use.
                           WINDOW
                                Xmin=0
                                Xmax=57
                                X=.6063829787
                                Xscl=1
                                Ymin=0
                                Ymax=75
                                 scl=1

14.  Press the [Y=] button.  Verify that the four "Y=" functions contain no information.  If
       they do, use the arrow keys and the [CLEAR] button to erase them.

15.  Activate the PLOT function by pressing [2nd][Y=].  All plots should by turned off.  If the plots are not turned off, select [4:  PlotsOff] from the menu using the arrow keys and [ENTER].  Press [ENTER] again to turn the plots off.  The home screen should say
"PlotsOff Done".  Return to the PLOT screen by pressing [2nd][Y=].

16.  Select Plot 1 from the menu using the arrow keys and [ENTER] or  pressing the number [1].

17.  Use the arrow keys and [ENTER] to select ON from the menu.  Use the same keys to select the TYPE of graph (line graph).  Move the cursor to the Xlist:  category and use
the [CLEAR] button to erase the information in the category.

18.  A menu of list names is available under the STAT function.  Activate the STAT function by pressing [2nd][LIST].  Use the arrow keys and [ENTER] to select X from the menu.

19. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the Ylist category.  Press [CLEAR] to erase
      the information in that category.  Follow the directions in step 18 to select Y from the
      STAT menu.

20. Use the arrow keys and [ENTER] to select the smallest point as the MARK.

21. Press the [GRAPH] button to view the graph.  Notice that the graph is distorted.  If an
error message appears, see the ERROR MESSAGES and OTHER PROBLEMS  section below.

22. To eliminate the distortion from the graph, press the [ZOOM] button.   Select {5:
Zsquare} from the menu using the arrow keys and [ENTER] or by pressing the number [5].

ERROR MESSAGES AND OTHER PROBLEMS

A DIM MISMATCH error occurs when the number of X values is not equal to the number of Y values.  The student either entering an extra number into a list or inadvertently deleting a number from a list normally causes this.  The student should check the lists to find the mistake.

A WINDOW RANGE error indicates a problem with the WINDOW settings (STEP 13).  This problem is caused when the MIN and MAX values are set to the same number or when the MIN value is greater than the MAX value.

Problems like this are normally caused when the x and y values for a single point are inverted on the lists.  Use the TRACE function to find the values which were entered for the point, then change them on the lists.

23. Students will present their haiku and calculator graphing to the class during the
      Culminating Activity in lesson five.
