Lesson Four:
Food Chain "Come and Eat!"
Grade Level: 6

Learner Outcomes:

Students will gain knowledge of the food chain and how it relates to
energy.
Duration of the lesson: Four 45 minutes sessions

Technology Tools/Courseware: Jewels of the
Caribbean Sea video
Teachers Notes:

Each student will need a copy of the food chain information on page
45 of The Ocean Book.

The teacher can make transparencies for the Food Chain Bar Graph and
the Food Chain Pyramid taken from chapter five of the Ecology for
Every Kid book to use on the over head projector.

The teacher can create a bulletin board by using the same format as
the Food Pyramid on page 47 of the Ocean Book.

The Ocean Book, Ecology for Every Kid, and
Oceans for Every Kid can be checked out from your local library.

Students will continue to work on comprehension questions, summaries,
morning activities, and vocabulary assignment daily.
Procedure:
-
The students will view the last half of the video, Jewels of the
Caribbean Sea.
-
The students will take the Test Your
Knowledge pretest to activate their background knowledge of the
food chain.
-
The students will read and discuss the food chain
information in chapter four of The Ocean Book.
-
The students will read information concerning the relationships between
food producers and food consumers in chapter twenty of the Oceans
for Every Kid book. Students will then answer questions
related to the food chain.
-
The students will complete the Food Chain Bar Graph and the Food Chain
Pyramid exercises in chapter five of the Ecology
for Every Kid book.

The students will draw a picture of their sea animal that was chosen
in Lesson Two.
-
The students will place their sea animals on the bulletin board pyramid
within the correct level of the food chain. Then the students will explain
to the class why they chose that particular level.

The students will retake the Test
Your Knowledge to access how much
knowledge they have gained from the lesson.
-
Students will take part in a seafood extravaganza sampling different
types of seafood. This feast will take place during the Culminating
Activity at the end of the unit in lesson five.
Modification:

Students' lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students can ask parents for seafood recipes and compile a class seafood
cookbook.
Evaluations/Assessment:

The teacher will access the students' knowledge by listening to their
explanation of which level their sea animal falls in the food chain.
