Lesson Five:
The Spirit of the Chumash Indians

for research purposes.

Students will participate in the culminating activities to synthesize
the five lessons of the unit.
Duration of the Lesson: Four 45-minutes sessions

Teacher Notes:

Students will continue to work on comprehension questions, summaries,
morning activities, and vocabulary assignment daily.
Procedures:
-
Activity #1 - The students will read the true story of Won-a-pa-lei,
Spirit
Woman.
-
Activity #2 - The students will work in cooperative learning
groups to give oral presentations on similarities and differences between
Won-a-pa-lei and Juana Maria, Spirit Woman.
-
Activity #3 - The students will work in pairs to research the
Chumash Indians on the internet. They will list the tribal name,
the language, population, and geographic location of the Chumash tribe
using the research guidelines.

Activity #4 - The students will work in cooperative learning
groups to give oral presentations on similarities and differences between
the Chumash Tribe and the Ghalas-at Tribe.

Activity #5 - The students will participate in a variety of culminating
activities to conclude the unit, Island of the Blue Dolphins.
Culminating Activities

will be invited to participate in the following culminating activities.)
Stations can be set up for the following activities:
-
Station 1 - This station will display the class booklet
illustrating and summarizing the Island of the Blue Dolphins. (Booklet
mentioned in lesson one.)

Station 2 - A computer will be set up to allow students to show
their sea animal power point presentations. (Power points created during
lesson two.)
-
Station 3 - An area on the wall be be used to display sea animal
graphs and haiku poems. (Created during lesson three.)
-
Station 4 - An area on the wall will be used to display the Food
Chain bulletin board. (Created during lesson four.)
-
Station 5 - A comparison chart will be displayed showing the
similarities and differences between Won-a-pa-lei and Juana Maria. (Created
during lesson five)

Station 6 - A comparison chart will be displayed showing
similarities and differences between the Chumash Tribe and the Ghaslas-at
Tribe. (Created during lesson five.)

Station 7 - A computer will be set up to allow the students to
play an Island of the Blue Dolphins Jeopardy
Game.
-
We will bring the unit to a close by watching the movie of the Island
of the Blue Dolphins and enjoying a seafood buffet.
Modifications:

A teacher's aide may assist students through the research assignment.
-
Students' lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Students will be challenged to find three other Native American tribes
and give an oral presentation of their findings.

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their research, participation,
and performance during cooperative learning group presentations.
