Journey Underground.....Plan a Field trip
 
 
 
 
Grade Level(s): 5th through 8th

Learner Outcomes:

Students will do research using Internet technology. 
Students will make and keep an electronic journal.
Given a list of caves to research students will calculate the cost of a field trip.
Students will use an electronic map to calculate the distance and time for the trip.
Duration of Lesson:  2-3 (45 min. class periods)
Materials:  pencil, paper, floppy disk, directions for making a journal, a list of sites

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Multimedia computer with internet access, word processing program, data projector, printer, map maker,

Teacher Notes:

All students should have on file a current Internet permission form/acceptable use policy.
This lesson requires the use of a computer lab.
Teachers need to create a folder for electronic journal entries or provide a floppy disk for each student.
Preview the caves listing and choose 4 or 5 for students to research.
Not all cave listings will have the information you want.  Some sites only give an email address or phone number to contact for trip information. 
Provide students who are not able to use the Internet with some addresses or phone numbers.
Note: you will need to type in the URL address not the key words to go directly to the site.
Students may be grouped and assigned one site to complete the information.

  •  1.  Log on to the computer. 
  •  2.  Double click Internet explorer (e). 
  •  3.  In the URL address type:

  •  4.  Complete the information on the activity sheet. 
  •  5.  Use courseware for mapping directions:  Such as Rand McNally "Trip Finder",or mapquest.com on the Internet. 
  •  6.  Map out directions to your cave site. 
  •  7.  Print the directions to share with the class. 
  •  8.  Write a summary of your cave in your electronic journal. 
  •  9.  Share this information with the class. 
  • 10.  Compare and contrast the pros and cons of taking a field trip to these caverns. 

  • Modifications:  Students unable to use internet access will write for information.
    Special needs students will work cooperatively with a partner.
