Teacher Notes:
- Teacher will get approval from parents to allow each child to use the Internet
Procedures:
- Teacher will assist children in accessing the Internet site: Kids Health and explore several different subtitles under the heading: I Feel Sick that have to do with symptoms of diseases.
- Teacher will explain the definition of disease. Teacher will ask students about their experiences with diseases and different symptoms they have had in the past.
- Students will write the name of a disease they are familiar with on a note card and tell if they think the disease will spread to others. If it will, during oral discussion, they will explain how. For example: cold - not covering your mouth when you sneeze. Teacher will collect the cards and discuss each, making corrections as needed.
- The teacher will explain that some diseases are communicable and some are noncommunicable and that some are infectious and some are noninfectious. It will be explained to the children that pathogens are what spread diseases.
- The teacher will explain that some diseases can be prevented by inoculations. This makes the person immune to the particular disease.
- As a follow-up, the teacher will review over different diseases that are predominant in schools and will discuss if they are contagious to others and how the contagious diseases may be prevented referencing previously discussed information from the site: Kids Health
- Children will form groups of 3 and complete the activity: Conquer Castle Disease on the computer.
- The teacher will make a list of all the diseases the class has discussed during the period on the chalk board. On paper, the children will make a graph of the diseases into 2 classifications - contagious and noncontagious.
Modifications:
- Allow extra time for those who need it when completing assignments.
- Allow special students who need modifications to group with peer tutors when needed
- Students who do not have permission to use the Internet will type a list of diseases and symptoms of each on a word processor.
Enrichment Activities:
- Visit the site: Common Cold and write down 10 important details about the common cold into a word document and print.
Evaluation/Assessment:
- Students will complete Lesson 1 Quiz and print.
