- Students will become familiar with Chicken Pox as a communicable disease.
- Students will explain what causes Chicken Pox.
- Students will explain what will prevent Chicken Pox.

- computers with Internet access
Procedures:
- Teacher will get approval from parents to allow each child to use the Internet.
- Teacher will reference the site: New York State Department of Health. This is an excellent place to look at Chicken Pox and it's causes and how to prevent.
- Teacher will assist children in accessing the Internet site: Kids Health and explore the subtitle: The Curse of the Chicken Pox. This site explains all about the causes, symptoms, myths, and ways to prevent Chicken Pox.
- Teacher will ask students about their experiences with Chicken Pox and different symptoms they experienced while having the disease.
- Teacher will have the students calculate the percentage of students in the class who had Chicken Pox. For example, if there are 20 students in the class and 10 had Chicken Pox, then the answer is 50%.
- The teacher will explain that some diseases can be prevented by inoculations and the Chicken Pox vaccine is now available. It has just become available in the last 10 years which shows how much our medical research continues to improve. The inoculation makes the person immune to Chicken Pox.
- Children will and complete the Test Your Knowledge quiz:
- The teacher will poll the children to see how many questions the children got correct and incorrect.
- Explain to the children that Chicken Pox is a virus and that adults can get the virus too. This is called Shingles.
Modifications:
- Allow extra time for those who need it when completing assignments.
- Allow special students who need modifications to group with peer tutors when needed.
- Students who do not have permission to use the Internet write a paragraph about the causes and symptoms of the Chicken Pox referencing their Health book.
Enrichment Activities:
- Children will research the Internet and make a list of 15 different diseases that can be vaccinated besides Chicken Pox.
