Learner Outcomes:
  1. Students will recognize the results of sun damage to their skin.
  2. Students will learn ways to protect their skin.
Duration of Lesson:  40-50 minutes
Materials
  • paper
  • pencils
  • dictionaries
  • crossword puzzle worksheet (copies for entire class)
  • chart of sun and skin protection facts
Technology Tools/Courseware: 
computers with Internet access
 
Teacher Notes:
  • Teacher will prepare a chart with important facts concerning sun damage and skin protection.
  • Teacher will print worksheet with crossword puzzle and hidden word puzzle from Sun Smart. Click on Sun Smart Fun and make copies for all students.  Make copies of only the second page for students.  However, retain one copy of the first page - it has the answers to the crossword puzzle (and clues). Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed.
  • Teacher will have copies of signed permission forms for students to use the Internet.
  • Teacher will make a copy of the evaluation for each student.
Procedures:
 
  1. The teacher will survey the students before the lesson and again after the lesson.  Before the lesson, the teacher will ask how many use sunscreen and how many do not.  After the lesson, the teacher will ask how many plan to use sunscreen in the future and how many do not.  The students will calculate the differences in the before and after numbers (and calculate the percentage of increase or decrease).
  2. The teacher will show the students the chart about sun damage and skin protection, then lead a discussion about the facts.
  3. The students will find the definition to the following words in the dictionary: skin, sunburn, melanin, cancer, moles, SPF, epidermis, sunscreen.
  4. The students will complete the crossword puzzle page.
  5. The students will complete the evaluation.
Modifications:
  1. Students who have difficulty finding definitions in the dictionary or completing the puzzles may be paired with a peer.
  2. Students will be given extra time if needed.
  3. Students without Internet permission may use other reference sources to find more information about skin protection.
Enrichment Activities:
  • Students may access Cool Shade for more information about skin protection.
Evaluation: 
  • The evaluation page will show how well the student has mastered the topic.
