Description This unit explores the connections among myth, science fiction
and science fact. Classical mythology was an attempt to
explain things that the ancient Greeks and Romans didn't
understand. In a similar fashion, science fiction of today
could become the scientific fact of the future. The unit asks
students to consider how science fiction can be a cautionary
tale for the future. It asks students to be creative and
imagine "What if..." in writing an original science fiction
story. Students will read and analyze science
fiction/fantasy stories, and then create original related
illustrations and other artwork. To culminate the unit,
students will be invited to create an origianl science
fiction/fantasy board game and/or design a city of the future.
